When to Remove Suckers From Tomatoes and When to Leave Them
Leaving every sucker can crowd a plant, but removing every side shoot can reduce its productive leaf area. I’ll help you choose a pruning approach based on tomato type, space, support, climate, and disease pressure.
Tomato suckers are neither automatically harmful nor automatically worth removing. They’re side shoots that grow from the joint between a leaf and the main stem, and each one can become a flowering, fruit-bearing branch. Whether you remove one depends less on gardening tradition than on the kind of tomato you’re growing and the conditions around it.
A compact determinate plant in a roomy cage may need little pruning. An indeterminate vine trained up a single stake may need more deliberate thinning simply to stay manageable. Between those examples are many reasonable choices.
First, identify the tomato’s growth habit
Determinate tomatoes grow toward a relatively fixed mature size, produce much of their crop over a concentrated period, and then slow down. Their side shoots contribute to the plant’s overall framework and fruit production. Removing many of them can reduce the number of flowering sites and leaves without providing much benefit, especially if the plant already has adequate space and support.
Indeterminate tomatoes continue producing new stems and flower clusters as long as weather and plant health allow. They can become large, tangled plants, particularly in a small garden bed or container. Selective sucker removal can make these vines easier to support, improve access to fruit, and keep the foliage from forming an impenetrable green curtain.
Some varieties are described as semideterminate or vigorous determinate. Labels aren’t perfectly consistent, so use the stated growth habit as a starting point, then observe the plant. If it stops extending after a set size and develops a fairly compact shape, heavy pruning is usually unnecessary. If it keeps producing long stems and new growth, treat it more like an indeterminate plant.
When the label is missing, the plant’s form offers clues, but it won’t always identify the variety with certainty. In that situation, a conservative approach works well: support the plant first, remove only clearly inconvenient growth, and watch how quickly it fills the available space.
When leaving suckers makes sense
Leave most or all suckers when you’re growing a determinate tomato and have enough room for its natural shape. More stems mean more leaves, and leaves help power fruit development. A plant with a healthy amount of foliage can also shade some fruit from intense sun. Removing growth simply because it appears may leave the plant sparse without solving a real problem.
You can also leave suckers on an indeterminate plant when you’re using a large cage, trellis, or other support that can carry several stems. This approach gives the plant more potential flowering sites, but it requires enough room for air and light to move through the canopy. A sprawling or multi-stemmed plant isn’t automatically poorly managed; it just needs support designed for that growth pattern.
Leaving a sucker is especially reasonable when it has already become a substantial branch with flower clusters. Cutting a thick branch creates a larger wound and removes established foliage and potential fruit. If the branch is healthy and not blocking a path, rubbing against another stem, or overwhelming its support, there may be little to gain from removing it.
In a hot, sunny climate, preserving foliage can be useful because leaves help protect developing tomatoes from excessive direct exposure. That doesn’t mean dense, wet foliage is always desirable, but it does mean that aggressive pruning can create its own problems. Aim for enough openness to manage the plant, not a bare stem decorated with a few determined leaves.
When removing suckers helps

An indeterminate tomato trained to one or two main stems is easier to tie, inspect, and harvest than one producing a dozen unsupported branches. Remove a sucker when it’s growing into a walkway, pushing heavily against neighboring plants, or creating a dense cluster that stays damp after watering or rain. Better airflow can help foliage dry more quickly and can make it easier to spot discolored leaves, pests, or fruit beginning to rot. Pruning won’t prevent disease on its own, especially when disease is already widespread, but it can make the plant easier to monitor and manage.
You might also remove a few lower suckers and branches that touch the soil. Ground contact can splash soil onto foliage during watering or rain, and low growth is harder to inspect. Keep enough leaves to avoid stripping the lower portion of the plant completely; the goal is to lift foliage away from the soil, not to create a long, exposed trunk for its own sake.
A sucker can be worth removing if it originates in a crowded fork and competes with the main stems you’ve deliberately chosen to train. This is a design decision rather than a rule. If you want one main stem, remove competing shoots early. If you’re training two or three stems, choose those stems and remove the others before the plant becomes difficult to sort out.
Check the plant’s support before pruning: Decide how many major stems your cage, stake, or trellis can actually hold, then remove growth that exceeds that plan rather than pruning by habit.
How to choose which suckers to remove
Start by looking at the whole plant instead of pinching every shoot as soon as you see it. Identify the main stem or stems, the available support, and any branches that are crossing, rubbing, lying on the ground, or blocking access. This gives you a reason for each cut and reduces the chance of removing productive growth unnecessarily.
Small suckers are easy to remove by pinching them between your fingers. They often appear at the leaf axils, where a leaf branch meets the main stem. Removing them while they’re young generally creates a small wound and lets you make gradual decisions as the plant develops.
For a thicker shoot, use a clean, sharp pruner rather than twisting or tearing the branch. Make a neat cut close to the stem without gouging the main stem itself. Work when the plant is reasonably dry, and avoid handling one plant immediately after another if you’ve encountered obvious disease. Cleaning tools between plants is a sensible extra precaution when disease is present or suspected.
Don’t confuse a sucker with a flower cluster. A sucker begins in the junction between a leaf and the stem and usually develops its own leaves as it grows. A flower cluster emerges directly from the stem and carries buds or flowers without forming a leafy shoot at its base. If you’re unsure, wait a day or two; the difference often becomes clearer as the growth develops.
A simple approach for common situations
For a determinate tomato in a cage, leave most suckers and remove only low growth touching the soil or branches that are clearly damaged, diseased, or interfering with support. This preserves the plant’s natural canopy while solving the specific problems you can see.
For an indeterminate tomato on a single stake, select one main stem or a small number of stems that the stake can support. Remove competing suckers early, and continue checking the plant every few days during vigorous growth. Tie the chosen stems loosely as they extend rather than waiting until a heavy branch bends or breaks.
For an indeterminate tomato in a large cage, you can leave several healthy suckers if the cage is sturdy and the plant has adequate spacing. Thin branches where the interior becomes crowded, fruit is difficult to reach, or foliage stays wet for long periods. A cage gives you more freedom, but it doesn’t create unlimited room.
For a plant in a hot, dry location, be cautious about removing large amounts of foliage at once. Preserve leaves that shade fruit, and make changes gradually. For a humid or rainy location, prioritize spacing and access so you can inspect the plant and keep foliage from becoming a dense, persistently damp mass. Local conditions don’t dictate one universal pruning schedule, but they do change the trade-offs.
Mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is treating all tomatoes as if they have the same growth habit. A pruning routine that works for a tall indeterminate variety may unnecessarily reduce the crop of a determinate one. Check the seed packet, plant tag, or variety information when available before making major cuts.
Another mistake is waiting until the plant has become a tangled mass and then removing many large branches at once. Gradual pruning is easier on the plant and on you. It also lets you see whether the current amount of growth is actually causing a problem.
Avoid pruning wet plants, and don’t remove healthy leaves merely because the plant looks full. Leaves are part of the plant’s food-producing system. Focus on suckers and branches that conflict with your support plan, crowd the canopy, touch the soil, or show damage or disease.
Finally, don’t assume pruning can compensate for poor spacing or weak support. A tomato planted too close to its neighbors may remain crowded even after careful suckering. Give the plant a suitable structure and enough room first; pruning should refine the arrangement, not perform a rescue act every week.
