How to Care for Newly Planted Shrubs During Their First Year

New shrubs can wilt, drown, or struggle with weeds while their roots are still settling in. I’ll help you build a first-year routine for watering, mulch, pruning restraint, and recognizing when a plant needs recovery rather than more attention.

Newly planted shrubs often look deceptively settled. The leaves may be green, the root ball is covered, and the garden appears finished—but below ground, the plant is still adjusting to a new soil, exposure, and watering pattern. The first year is less about making a shrub grow quickly than helping it establish dependable roots.

Your main jobs are straightforward: keep the root zone consistently, not constantly, moist; prevent grass and weeds from competing for water; use mulch carefully; and resist pruning or feeding every time the plant looks slightly unhappy. Most first-year problems come from too much or too little intervention.

Start with the root zone, not the leaves

When a shrub is planted, its existing root ball may be surrounded by soil that dries at a different rate from the surrounding ground. A container-grown shrub can have a compact, dry root mass inside wetter native soil. A balled-and-burlapped shrub may also need time for roots to move beyond the original root ball. Watering only the surface or only the surrounding soil can leave the most important roots short of moisture.

Apply water slowly at the base of the shrub, over the original root ball and the nearby planting area. The goal is to moisten the soil deeply without creating a standing puddle. A hose set to a gentle trickle, a watering wand, or a soaker hose can work well. Fast, forceful water may run off compacted soil instead of soaking in.

After watering, check the soil rather than relying on a fixed schedule. Push a finger or a narrow hand tool several inches into the soil near the root ball, taking care not to damage roots. If the soil feels dry at that depth, water thoroughly. If it is cool and moist, wait and check again. Sandy soil may need attention more often than moisture-retentive clay, while a shaded planting generally dries more slowly than one exposed to wind and afternoon sun.

New shrubs usually need more frequent attention during the first several weeks, then gradually less frequent but deeper watering as roots extend. The exact timing depends on the shrub, soil, weather, and planting season. Hot, windy conditions can dry a plant quickly; cool or rainy conditions can make additional water unnecessary.

Check the week’s weather before watering: Compare recent rain, forecast conditions, soil moisture, and the shrub’s exposure before adding more water. Local extension services, plant labels, and regional gardening guidance can help you adjust general advice to your climate and soil.

Build a simple watering routine

A useful routine has two parts: observe and respond. Look at the soil, the weather, and the plant’s overall condition every few days while the shrub is getting established. You don’t need to hover over it like a nervous stage parent, but you do need to notice patterns.

Water at the soil line rather than spraying the foliage whenever possible. Wet leaves that remain damp for long periods can encourage some diseases, and overhead watering loses more water to evaporation. Morning is often a convenient time because the soil can absorb water during the day, although thorough watering matters more than following a perfect clock.

If water runs away from the planting hole, pause and allow it to soak in before continuing. On heavy clay or compacted soil, several slower applications may work better than one long blast. If the planting area stays soggy for extended periods, stop adding water and investigate drainage. Shrubs generally tolerate a brief dry spell better than roots left in airless, saturated soil.

Wilting is a useful warning but not a complete diagnosis. Leaves can droop because the soil is dry, the roots are damaged, the weather is unusually hot, or the plant is reacting to transplant stress. Conversely, a shrub can look wilted even when the soil is wet because overwatering has impaired the roots. Check the soil before choosing between a hose and a drainage solution.

Use mulch as a buffer, not a blanket

A layer of organic mulch can reduce evaporation, moderate soil temperature, and slow weed growth. Spread it over the planting area in a layer that is usually about 2 to 3 inches deep, allowing some variation for the material and local conditions. Extend the mulch outward over the root zone, but keep it away from the trunk and main stems.

The familiar “mulch volcano”—a mound pressed against the base of a shrub—is a poor substitute for careful planting. Constant moisture against bark or stems can contribute to decay and may attract pests. Leave a visible gap around the base, and fluff or redistribute mulch if it settles into contact with the plant.

Mulch doesn’t eliminate watering, especially during hot or dry periods. It also doesn’t make a badly drained site drain better. If the soil beneath the mulch is dry, water it. If the soil is persistently wet, reduce irrigation and address the underlying drainage problem rather than adding another layer.

As mulch breaks down, it may need topping up. Add only enough to restore a reasonable layer; repeatedly piling fresh material on top can bury the root flare or raise the soil level around the plant. Keep the transition between mulched and unmulched areas neat enough that you can still inspect the soil and base of the shrub.

Keep weeds and grass from taking the water

New shrubs compete poorly with established turf and aggressive weeds. Grass roots can occupy the same shallow soil where a young shrub is trying to establish, while weeds may grow quickly after watering or rain. A weed-free area beneath and around the shrub gives water and nutrients a better chance of reaching the intended plant.

Pull or hoe small weeds when the soil is slightly moist, taking care not to dig deeply near the root ball. Deep cultivation can sever new roots. Mulch will slow weeds but won’t stop every seed from arriving, so occasional shallow weeding is usually more effective than waiting until the area becomes a small jungle.

Avoid piling grass clippings or dense plant debris against the shrub. Thick, wet material can mat together, restrict air movement, and create a damp environment at the base. If you use organic materials as mulch, keep them loose and make sure the shrub’s stems remain visible.

Prune only what needs pruning

First-year pruning should be restrained. Remove dead, broken, diseased, or badly rubbing branches, and cut them back to an appropriate branch junction or healthy bud. If a branch was damaged during transport or planting, correcting that damage is reasonable.

Avoid major shaping just because the shrub looks uneven. A newly planted plant needs leaves to produce energy while its roots recover and expand. Heavy pruning can reduce that energy supply and add another stress at the same time the shrub is adjusting to its new site.

There are exceptions. Some shrubs flower on older wood and others on new growth, so pruning at the wrong time can remove next season’s flower buds. If flowering, fruiting, or the shrub’s final size matters to you, identify the plant and check its specific pruning requirements before making substantial cuts. A plant label or reliable regional horticultural source is more useful here than a generic calendar.

Don’t rush to fertilize or “fix” every symptom

New shrubs don’t automatically need fertilizer at planting or during their first year. Extra nutrients won’t compensate for poor watering, damaged roots, compacted soil, or an unsuitable location. In some cases, pushing lush top growth before the root system is established can make the plant more vulnerable to drought or cold.

First correct the basics: planting depth, moisture, drainage, mulch placement, and competition from weeds. If the shrub later shows a persistent, specific nutrient deficiency, identify the plant and consider a soil test before applying a product. Follow the product label carefully, particularly around dosage and application timing.

Yellow leaves, browning edges, and leaf drop can result from several different causes. A few damaged or discolored leaves after planting may reflect transplant stress. Widespread symptoms, steadily declining growth, or repeated damage deserves closer inspection of the roots, soil moisture, pests, and exposure rather than an automatic dose of fertilizer.

Troubleshoot the common first-year problems

The leaves are drooping. Check soil moisture several inches down. If the soil is dry, water slowly and thoroughly. If it is wet, don’t keep watering; examine drainage and look for root or stem damage. Temporary afternoon drooping can occur in heat, but persistent wilting needs attention.

The leaves are turning brown at the edges. Dry soil, wind, reflected heat, salt buildup, root damage, and excessive fertilizer can all contribute. Check moisture and recent treatments first. Remove only leaves that are fully dead; damaged leaves still contribute some energy while they remain partly green.

The shrub has lost leaves. Some deciduous shrubs naturally shed leaves in their dormant season, and transplanting can cause additional temporary loss. Confirm the plant’s expected seasonal behavior, then inspect stems for flexible green tissue, pests, and signs of drying. Don’t increase watering automatically if the soil is already wet.

Water pools around the shrub. Pause routine irrigation and observe how quickly the water drains. Compacted soil, a low planting site, or a root ball that remains dense can all contribute. Avoid repeatedly adding mulch or soil to hide the puddle. If drainage remains poor, the shrub may be in the wrong location for its needs.

Weeds keep returning. That is normal. Remove them while small, maintain a correctly placed mulch layer, and keep turf from creeping into the root zone. Repeated shallow control is safer for young roots than aggressive digging.

The shrub is growing unevenly. First-year growth can reflect differences in light, wind, water, or transplant damage. Check the site before pruning for appearance. If one branch is dead or broken, remove it; otherwise, give the shrub time to establish before making major shape corrections.

Know what “on track” looks like

Establishment is often quiet. A shrub may produce little visible growth while directing energy toward roots. Signs that conditions are generally suitable include firm stems, healthy buds, foliage appropriate to the season, and soil that dries somewhat between thorough waterings without becoming powder-dry for long periods.

You don’t need perfect leaves. A few dropped or blemished leaves aren't necessarily a crisis, especially soon after planting or during challenging weather. Look for the direction of change: a shrub that stabilizes after an early setback is different from one that wilts more severely each week.

Keep a simple record of planting date, watering, major weather, and any pruning or treatments. Notes can reveal that a problem follows dry wind, heavy rain, or a particular irrigation habit. They also make it easier to avoid repeating a well-intentioned mistake.

By the end of the first year, the shrub may not be dramatically larger, and that’s fine. A well-established root system is the less visible reward. Continue checking moisture during dry spells, maintain an airy mulch layer, control competing weeds, and prune only for clear reasons. When a shrub struggles, begin with the soil and roots before reaching for a product or the pruning shears; recovery usually starts with removing the stress that caused the problem.
