Mulch, shade, container placement, restrained pruning, and a sensible watering plan all help, but they don’t have equal value in every garden. The best approach depends on your soil, plantings, irrigation setup, and the length of the heat wave.

Start with the plants most at risk

Before changing anything, walk through the garden and identify plants that are young, newly transplanted, shallow-rooted, growing in containers, or already showing stress. Seedlings, fresh plantings, leafy vegetables, flowering annuals, and shrubs planted within the past year generally deserve more attention than established, drought-tolerant plants with deep root systems.

Also note areas that heat up faster than the rest of the property. South- and west-facing walls, paved surfaces, raised beds, hanging baskets, and dark containers can become substantially hotter than a shaded bed. A plant that tolerates full sun in the ground may struggle when its roots are confined to a small pot beside a concrete patio.

This quick assessment helps you spend resources where they matter. You may need extra protection for six containers and one young tree, not the entire garden. Established plants that are adapted to your climate often need less intervention than recently planted ones, provided they receive a thorough watering before the heat arrives.

Water deeply before the heat arrives

If the soil is dry several inches below the surface, water thoroughly before the hottest period begins. A deep watering encourages moisture into the root zone, where it lasts longer than a light sprinkle that wets only the surface. Apply water slowly enough that it can soak in rather than run off, especially on compacted soil or slopes.

How deeply you should water depends on the plant and soil. Most garden beds benefit from moisture reaching several inches down, while trees and shrubs need water distributed across the area beneath their branches rather than concentrated against the trunk. Containers should be watered until excess drains from the bottom, then checked again later because a dry potting mix can initially repel water and allow it to run down the sides.

Watering at the cooler parts of the day usually reduces evaporation and gives foliage time to dry if it becomes wet. Morning is often convenient because plants have the day ahead to use the water. Evening watering can also work, but avoid routinely leaving susceptible foliage wet overnight, particularly where fungal disease is already a problem.

A timer or drip system can improve consistency, but it isn’t automatically more efficient. A poorly adjusted system may water pavement, miss the root zone, or run longer than necessary. Check emitters and hoses while the weather is still manageable. A simple test with shallow cans or straight-sided containers can show whether several areas receive roughly the amount of water you intended.

Check the week’s watering rules: Before increasing irrigation, look up current restrictions or drought measures from your city, county, water utility, or state agency. Requirements can change during heat and drought, and some areas limit watering days, times, or methods.

Use mulch where it can do real work

A layer of organic mulch is one of the least expensive ways to slow evaporation and moderate soil temperature. Compost, shredded leaves, pine straw, and untreated wood-based mulch can all be useful, depending on what is readily available and appropriate for your garden. Mulch works best when it covers bare soil rather than forming a thick blanket over existing weeds and dry debris.

Spread mulch evenly around plants, leaving a small gap around stems and trunks. Piling it against a tree trunk or shrub base holds moisture against tissue that should remain relatively dry and can encourage decay or pest problems. In many beds, a layer around 2 to 3 inches is sufficient, though the right amount varies with the material and local conditions. Fine materials can compact; coarse materials may need more depth to provide the same coverage.

You don’t need to mulch every square foot immediately. Prioritize newly planted beds, exposed vegetable rows, the sunny side of shrubs, and soil that dries quickly. If mulch is already present but thin or displaced, refreshing bare patches may be more cost-effective than spreading a new layer everywhere.

Avoid using fresh grass clippings in a thick layer. They can mat together, heat up, and become unpleasantly wet underneath. If you have clippings free of herbicide residues, let them dry and apply them in thin layers, or combine them with other organic materials.

Add shade without buying a permanent structure

Temporary shade can reduce heat stress for young plants, greens, and containers, particularly during the hottest afternoon hours. A shade cloth supported above the foliage is more useful than fabric laid directly on plants, which can trap heat and rub against leaves. Old sheets or lightweight curtains may provide short-term relief, but they should be secured so wind doesn’t turn them into garden sails.

The goal isn’t always maximum shade. Many vegetables and flowering plants still need light to grow, and dense shade can reduce flowering or make foliage damp for longer. A temporary screen on the west side may be enough. You can also use a patio umbrella, a movable trellis, or the shadow of a larger plant if it provides coverage during the hottest part of the day.

Spend first on shade for plants that are both vulnerable and valuable to replace, such as young trees, recently transplanted perennials, or a small collection of containers. Established heat-loving plants may not need protection at all. If a plant is wilting only briefly in late afternoon but recovers by morning and the soil is adequately moist, adding shade may solve a problem that doesn’t actually require solving.

Reposition containers before they overheat

Container plants are often the first to suffer because their roots have less insulation and less available moisture than roots in the ground. Move pots away from reflected heat from walls, metal railings, and pavement when practical. Grouping containers can reduce exposed surface area and make watering more efficient, while placing them where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade can reduce stress without eliminating light.

Don’t automatically move every pot into deep shade. Sudden changes in light can weaken sun-loving plants, and heavy containers are awkward to relocate once the heat wave begins. Shift them gradually if you have time, or use temporary shade during the afternoon. Elevating pots slightly so drainage holes remain open is useful, but placing them on a hot surface can still warm the root zone.

Check small pots at least once daily during extreme heat, and check hanging baskets even more often if they’re exposed. Their limited volume can dry rapidly. Water thoroughly rather than repeatedly sprinkling the surface, and make sure the pot drains freely. A saucer can catch runoff, but don’t allow containers to stand in water for long periods unless the plant specifically requires consistently wet conditions.

Pause hard pruning and unnecessary fertilizing

Pruning encourages new growth, and fresh growth is often more vulnerable to heat and water stress than mature foliage. Unless a branch is broken, diseased, obstructing a walkway, or creating a clear hazard, postpone major pruning until the heat has passed. Removing healthy leaves before a heat wave also reduces the plant’s ability to shade itself and produce energy.

Fertilizing is usually not the best emergency response to heat stress. Fertilizer can stimulate growth when the plant’s water supply is already strained, and concentrated products can damage roots if applied incorrectly. Follow the product label and the needs of the specific plant rather than feeding stressed plants in hopes of a quick recovery. If you recently fertilized, avoid adding more simply because leaves look tired.

Deadheading spent flowers is generally less disruptive than hard pruning, but it’s optional during a short heat wave. When water and time are limited, protecting roots and maintaining adequate moisture matter more than keeping every plant perfectly groomed.

Monitor moisture, not just wilt

Inspect irrigation after it runs. Look for clogged emitters, broken lines, leaks, and areas that remain dry beneath dense foliage. Hand-watering a missed plant may be appropriate during a heat wave, but repair the underlying problem afterward so the same plant doesn’t become a recurring water sink.

Choose the most efficient response for your garden

If you have limited time, begin with newly planted trees and shrubs, containers, vegetable seedlings, and plants in exposed hot spots. Water deeply, add mulch to bare soil, and provide afternoon shade where necessary. Those steps usually offer more benefit than frequent light watering across an established landscape.

If water is limited, concentrate it at the root zones of priority plants and avoid watering pavement, empty soil, or lawns that have already entered a normal period of summer dormancy for your region. A watering wand with a shutoff, a well-placed soaker hose, or a properly adjusted drip line can reduce waste, but the equipment matters less than directing water slowly to the roots.

If you’re preparing for a heat wave that may last beyond a few days, make a simple monitoring plan. Check vulnerable plants at the same time each morning, note which containers dry fastest, and inspect mulch and irrigation after windy weather. This turns a vague feeling that the garden is suffering into specific information you can use.

The most cost-effective preparation is usually modest: water the root zone before the soil becomes parched, cover exposed soil with an appropriate mulch layer, shift or shade vulnerable containers, and leave healthy plants mostly alone. Keep checking conditions as the forecast develops, because heat, wind, humidity, soil type, and local water rules all affect how much intervention your garden needs.
