How to Prepare a Garden for a Dry Autumn

Start with the soil, not the forecast
Before changing your irrigation schedule, check the soil where roots are actually growing. Push a finger or hand trowel several inches into a planting bed, or use a soil probe if the ground is compacted. Surface dust can hide moist soil below, while a damp-looking surface can conceal dry conditions farther down. In containers, check near the drainage holes as well as at the top.
Water when the root zone is beginning to dry, rather than waiting for plants to wilt. Wilting is a late signal for many plants and can be especially hard on recently planted trees and shrubs. On the other hand, watering soil that is already wet reduces air space around roots and can encourage root problems. The goal is steady moisture with time for the soil to drain between applications.
Water slowly enough that it soaks in instead of running across the surface. A soaker hose, drip system, or hose fitted with a gentle-flow nozzle can work well, although each system needs checking. Place a shallow container beneath a sprinkler or emitter to see how much water is being delivered, and inspect the soil afterward. A timer can improve consistency, but it can’t tell whether a clogged emitter, sudden rain, or compacted soil has changed the result.
Newly planted specimens deserve priority. Their root balls can dry out even when the surrounding bed feels reasonably moist because the original nursery soil and the native soil may absorb water at different rates. Apply water over the root ball and the surrounding planting area, encouraging roots to move outward. Avoid creating a permanently wet basin against the trunk or stems.

Mature trees and shrubs should generally be watered around the outer portion of their root zones rather than only at the trunk. Refresh mulch without smothering plants
Mulch is valuable in a dry autumn because it slows evaporation, moderates soil temperature, and reduces competition from weeds. It also helps water infiltrate instead of striking bare soil and running away. Check the existing layer before adding more. If it is still reasonably deep and hasn't been blown aside, a simple redistribution may be all that is needed.
Keep mulch away from trunks, crowns, and plant stems. A thick, wet collar around a trunk can trap moisture against the bark and create conditions for decay or pests. Spread mulch in a broad, even layer over the root zone, leaving a small gap around each trunk. For most garden beds, a few inches is sufficient; the ideal depth depends on the material and the planting.
Organic mulches such as shredded bark, wood chips, and composted material behave differently. Fine material can compact and shed water if applied too thickly, while coarse chips allow more air movement but may take longer to decompose. Gravel or other inorganic mulch can reduce some evaporation, yet it may increase reflected heat and isn't always the best choice around plants that prefer cooler soil.
If the bed is dry and crusted, loosen only the surface carefully where you can do so without damaging shallow roots. Then water slowly and mulch afterward. Applying mulch to bone-dry soil won’t replace the missing water, and deeply disturbing the bed can break roots while increasing evaporation.
Clean up with a purpose
Dry autumn cleanup should focus on disease, pests, fire risk, and access—not on making every bed perfectly bare. Remove leaves and stems that are clearly diseased or infested, especially when the problem is known to persist in fallen debris. Dispose of affected material according to local guidance rather than adding it to a home compost pile that may not reach temperatures needed to reduce pathogens.
Healthy leaves can often remain in place as a natural soil cover or be shredded and returned to beds. A thick, unmatted layer over turf can block light and air, so rake or mulch those leaves where necessary. Around drought-stressed plants, preserving some organic cover is usually preferable to exposing the soil completely.
In fire-prone regions, keep dry vegetation, fallen branches, and loose mulch away from structures, vents, access routes, and other areas where local fire guidance calls for clearance. The safest arrangement depends on the type of mulch, slope, wind exposure, and distance from buildings. Don't assume that a material marketed as fire-resistant is safe in every location or installation.
Leave healthy seed heads and sturdy stems when they provide winter habitat or food and don’t conflict with local fire precautions. A selective cleanup can protect soil and beneficial insects while still removing material that is genuinely hazardous or diseased.
Make irrigation easier to maintain
Dry weather exposes weak points in an irrigation system. Walk the lines while they run and look for leaks, blocked emitters, broken fittings, overspray, and water pooling in one place. Check that water reaches the plants rather than sidewalks, driveways, or the base of a wall. Adjust emitters as plants grow; a system that worked for a small shrub may be poorly positioned months later.
Group plants with similar water needs where possible. A thirsty plant on the same zone as drought-adapted plants tends to produce an awkward compromise: either one group receives too much or the other receives too little. Containers, raised beds, newly planted trees, and established low-water beds often need separate attention.
Hand watering is useful for spot checks and new plantings, but it can become inconsistent across a large garden. Drip irrigation can reduce overspray and deliver water near roots, though it still requires filtration, flushing, and regular inspection. Whatever method you use, measure its output occasionally instead of assuming the system is performing as designed.
Prepare for the next shift in weather
A dry autumn can end abruptly. Keep watching soil moisture after a rain, since a brief shower may wet only the surface. Conversely, a longer storm may supply enough water that the next irrigation should be delayed. Use the condition of the soil and plants to guide the decision rather than following a fixed schedule.
