What to Do When Ants Are Farming Aphids on Your Plants

Ants on a plant are easy to blame when the leaves are sticky and curling, but the ants may be protecting the real problem: aphids. Aphids feed on plant sap and excrete a sugary liquid called honeydew. Ants collect that honeydew, and some species actively protect aphids from predators or move them to fresh plant growth.
That relationship can make an aphid infestation persist, but it doesn’t mean every ant requires treatment. A sensible response starts by confirming what is happening, protecting useful insects, and then choosing the least disruptive action that fits the severity of the damage.
Confirm that aphids are the problem
Look closely at the newest leaves, tender stems, flower buds, and the undersides of leaves. Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that may be green, black, brown, yellow, gray, or pink, depending on the species and host plant. They may have wings or appear wingless. Their size and color vary, so the signs they leave behind are often more useful than appearance alone.
Common clues include leaves that curl, pucker, yellow, or grow unevenly; clusters of insects around new growth; and a shiny, sticky coating on leaves or nearby surfaces. That coating is honeydew. A dark, sooty film may develop on the honeydew later. Sooty mold usually looks unpleasant but is secondary: it grows on the sugary residue rather than feeding directly on healthy plant tissue.
Ants traveling repeatedly up and down a stem are another clue. They may be harvesting honeydew from aphids, though ants can also be visiting flowers, nesting nearby, or following other food sources. If you don’t find aphids or another honeydew-producing insect, don’t assume the ants are farming anything.
A few aphids rarely threaten a healthy established plant. They become more concerning when their numbers are increasing, new growth is distorted, the plant is young or stressed, or the infestation is attracting extensive ant activity and preventing beneficial insects from working.
Why the ants matter—and why they aren’t the whole problem
Aphids take plant fluids that contain more sugar than they need, so they excrete the excess as honeydew. Ants value that food source. In return, ants may remove or deter insects that eat aphids, including lady beetle larvae, lacewing larvae, hoverfly larvae, and some small predatory bugs. Ants may also shelter aphids in protected places or move them to softer growth.
This is a useful explanation for why aphids sometimes rebound soon after you remove them. The surviving aphids reproduce quickly in favorable conditions, and protected colonies can rebuild before predators return. Still, killing ants alone won't remove aphids already feeding on the plant. Likewise, spraying aphids without addressing a nearby ant trail may provide only temporary relief.
The relationship isn't always equally strong. Some ant species ignore aphids, and some aphid colonies are controlled naturally even when ants are present. Your goal isn't to eliminate every ant in the garden. It is to reduce the conditions that allow a damaging aphid colony to persist.
Start with the least disruptive response
If the plant is otherwise healthy and the aphid colony is small, use a strong but gentle stream of water to dislodge aphids from stems and leaf undersides. Aim carefully so you don’t break tender growth or keep the foliage wet for long periods. Repeat as needed over several days, because water removes insects present at the time but doesn't prevent others from returning.
Remove badly infested shoots only when pruning won’t sacrifice important flowers, fruit, or the plant’s shape. Seal or dispose of the removed material rather than leaving it beside the plant. Avoid pruning heavily just because a few leaves are curled; the plant may recover once feeding stops, and unnecessary cutting creates more tender regrowth for aphids to colonize.
Then check the plant’s growing conditions. Drought, excessive nitrogen, overcrowding, and soft flushes of new growth can make an infestation harder to manage. Water the root zone when the plant needs it, avoid applying more nitrogen than the soil and crop require, and improve air movement where practical. These steps don’t act as instant pest controls, but they make recovery more likely.
Protect the insects that can do the work for you
Before treating, inspect the colony for beneficial insects. Lady beetle larvae look nothing like the familiar rounded adults: they are elongated, often dark with orange or yellow markings, and covered with small projections. Lacewing larvae and hoverfly larvae can also be important aphid predators. Their presence may mean the infestation is already moving toward natural control.
Ants can interfere with those predators, but broad insecticide use can harm both groups and other garden life. A nonselective spray may kill predators that would have continued hunting after the aphid population declined. It can also affect pollinators if it reaches flowers or is used when they are active. For a small colony, washing aphids away and giving predators time to respond is often the better trade-off.
Don’t buy or release beneficial insects as a first response without understanding the conditions they need. Released predators may leave, fail to establish, or be unable to overcome a large protected colony. Habitat, plant diversity, and reduced pesticide exposure generally matter more than a one-time release.
Make the ant route less convenient
Follow the ants to learn where they are coming from. They may be using a plant stem, a stake, a wall, a fence, or another plant as a route. Trim contact points that create bridges to the foliage when doing so won’t harm the plant. Clear away debris or dense vegetation touching the stem, and check whether aphid-infested weeds nearby are serving as an alternate food source.
For woody plants, a commercially made sticky barrier can sometimes stop ants from climbing the trunk. Use such products only as directed, and prevent the material from touching the bark directly when the product instructions require a protective wrap. Sticky substances applied incorrectly can injure bark, trap nontarget wildlife, or become ineffective when covered with dust and debris. Never coat the trunks of plants that are too young or delicate for the product.
Ant baits can be useful when ants are persistently tending aphids, because worker ants may carry the bait back to the colony. Their effectiveness depends on the ant species, the bait formulation, competing food sources, and correct placement. Keep baits away from children, pets, and wildlife, and don’t place them where irrigation will wash them into soil or drains. Ant control may reduce aphid protection, but it should complement—not replace—aphid management.
Check the treatment label before applying it: If you use an ant bait, sticky barrier, insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, or another pesticide, confirm that the product is labeled for your plant and the pest, and follow the current directions for application, protective equipment, pollinator precautions, storage, and disposal. Product registrations and restrictions vary by location.
Use a targeted aphid treatment when damage is increasing
When water, pruning, and natural enemies aren’t keeping pace, a targeted product may be appropriate. Insecticidal soap and horticultural oils can work by contacting aphids, so thorough coverage of stems and leaf undersides is important. They generally provide limited residual control, which is a benefit when you’re trying to reduce unnecessary exposure, but it also means repeat applications may be needed.
Read the label before mixing or applying anything. Some plants are sensitive to soaps or oils, especially plants with hairy, waxy, or delicate foliage. Heat, drought stress, bright sun, and recent transplanting can increase the risk of leaf injury. Follow any temperature limits, dilution instructions, test-spot recommendations, and restrictions about blooming plants.
Avoid treating open flowers or spraying when bees and other pollinators are actively visiting. Don’t assume that a product is harmless because it is described as natural or botanical. “Natural” doesn't automatically mean selective, safe for beneficial insects, or suitable for every plant. A product’s label and your local requirements provide the relevant directions for its use.
Systemic insecticides can move inside a plant and may offer longer control, but they aren't the default choice for a minor aphid outbreak. They can expose beneficial insects that feed on treated plant tissue or honeydew, and their use around flowering plants requires particular care. Reserve stronger options for situations where the plant is suffering and less disruptive measures have failed, and use only products legally labeled for that situation.
Don’t confuse a recurring infestation with a treatment failure
Aphids can return from nearby plants, weeds, winged individuals, or eggs and other life stages that weren't affected by your first action. New growth can also become attractive after pruning or fertilizing. Check the plant every few days rather than applying treatments on a fixed schedule. Look for live aphids, fresh honeydew, increasing leaf distortion, and active ants.
If the infestation is declining and predators are present, stop spraying and continue monitoring. If ants are still traveling freely while aphids rebuild, improve the physical barriers or bait placement and inspect neighboring plants. If the plant is repeatedly attacked despite reasonable care, consider whether it is poorly suited to the site or whether a nearby host is sustaining the cycle.
Some plants tolerate aphids with little lasting harm. Others, including young plants and certain vegetables, can be damaged quickly or may transmit plant diseases when aphids feed. Remove severely affected annuals or replace a persistently vulnerable plant when repeated treatment would require more effort and risk than the plant is worth.
A measured plan for the next few days
First, identify the insects and inspect the whole plant, especially tender growth and leaf undersides. If the colony is small, wash it off, remove only badly infested portions, and watch for predators. At the same time, trace the ant route and remove convenient bridges or use a properly placed barrier or bait if ants are clearly protecting the colony.
Recheck the plant after a few days. Escalate to a labeled, targeted aphid treatment only when damage or insect numbers are increasing, and apply it in a way that protects flowers, beneficial insects, and the plant’s foliage. The most reliable solution is usually not an all-out attack on every ant in sight. It is a sequence: confirm the relationship, reduce protection, preserve natural control, and treat only the problem that remains.
