How to Plant a Bare Root Tree on the Day It Arrives

A bare-root tree has arrived with no pot and very little soil around its roots. That is normal, but it also means the roots can dry out quickly. Your main job is to move the tree from its packaging into suitable ground without letting the roots dry, freeze, or sit in water.

If the soil is workable and the site is ready, plant the tree the day it arrives. You don't need to improve every inch of the garden first. You do need a hole that is wide enough for the roots, a planting depth that keeps the trunk flare visible, and enough water to settle the soil around the roots.

Unpack the tree promptly

Open the package as soon as you can. Remove plastic wrapping, cardboard, and other packing materials so you can inspect the tree and prevent condensation from turning the roots into a soggy bundle. Keep any label with the tree; it may include planting depth, rootstock, pollination, or pruning information specific to that variety.

Look over the trunk, branches, and roots. Healthy bare roots are usually flexible and may be tan, brown, or cream-colored. They shouldn't smell sour or feel slimy. A few broken root tips are common after shipping, but roots that are black, mushy, badly dried, or covered in spreading mold may indicate a problem.

Don't prune the top heavily to compensate for root loss. Remove only clearly dead, damaged, or broken growth with clean, sharp pruners. If a root tip is torn, make a small, clean cut back to sound tissue rather than shortening every root to make them look tidy. The tree needs as much healthy root and branch structure as possible while it re-establishes.

What to do if you can't plant immediately

Planting on arrival is best, but an unexpected delay doesn't automatically ruin the tree. Keep the roots cool, shaded, and moist while you prepare the site. Wrap them loosely in damp paper, burlap, or another breathable material, then place the tree somewhere sheltered from sun, wind, heaters, and freezing temperatures.

The roots should be damp, not dripping. Don't leave them exposed on a workbench, in a sunny car, or in a sealed plastic bag filled with water. Excess moisture and poor airflow can encourage decay just as surely as dryness can.

For a delay of more than a short period, temporarily “heel in” the tree. Dig a shallow trench or use a container filled with loose, moist soil, compost-free topsoil, or similar material. Lay the tree at a slight angle, cover all the roots, and firm the soil gently around them. Keep the temporary planting cool and watered as needed. This is a holding arrangement, not the final home, so plant the tree properly as soon as conditions allow.

Confirm the short-term plan: If the ground is frozen, waterlogged, or unsafe to dig, follow the nursery’s storage instructions and keep the roots protected until the site becomes workable. Variety-specific advice can take priority over general guidance.

Prepare the hole before the tree goes in

Choose a site with the light, drainage, and space the mature tree will need. A small bare-root tree can make the available space seem generous, but its eventual canopy and root system may extend much farther. Check its mature size before planting, and avoid placing it where branches will conflict with buildings, wires, paths, or neighboring plants.

Dig the hole no deeper than the tree’s root system requires and at least two to three times wider than the spread of the roots. The sides should be gently sloped or roughened rather than glazed smooth with a shovel. A wide hole gives the roots room to move outward into loosened soil; a deep hole can cause the tree to sink after watering.

Set the excavated soil beside the hole. In most garden soil, you can use it to backfill. Mixing large amounts of compost, manure, or fertilizer into the hole can create a soft pocket that holds too much water or discourages roots from moving into the surrounding soil. If the native soil is seriously compacted or poorly drained, the larger site problem needs attention; a rich planting hole alone won't solve it.

Before placing the tree, check drainage if the site is questionable. A hole that fills with water and remains full for many hours may not be suitable for a tree that dislikes wet roots. You may need a different location or a raised planting area, depending on the species and the severity of the drainage problem.

Soak and arrange the roots

If the roots are dry when the tree arrives, place them in a bucket of clean water for a short rehydrating soak before planting. A few hours is generally enough. Don't leave the tree soaking indefinitely, and don't add fertilizer or other products unless the supplier specifically instructs you to do so. Roots need moisture and oxygen, not a spa treatment with a complicated menu.

Take the tree out of the water when the hole is ready. Spread the roots gently to see their natural direction. Don't force them into a tight circle, bend them sharply upward, or cram them into a hole that is too narrow. If a long root won't fit, widen the hole or make a modest clean cut to remove damaged material. Avoid making a deep, narrow hole simply to accommodate one root.

You can make a small mound of soil in the center of the hole and arrange the roots over it. This is particularly helpful for trees with a strong central root or a broad set of lateral roots. The roots should point outward and slightly downward, as they would in the ground, rather than folding back toward the trunk.

Set the correct planting depth

Depth is one of the most important parts of bare-root planting. Find the trunk flare—the place where the trunk broadens and the main roots begin. That flare should finish at, or just slightly above, the surrounding soil level. Don't bury the trunk in an attempt to make the tree look more secure.

Some trees have a graft union, visible as a swollen or angled area above the roots. The graft union must remain well above the soil. Follow the supplier’s instructions if they specify a particular height, especially for fruit trees or trees on dwarfing rootstock. If you can't identify the flare or graft clearly, pause and inspect the trunk before backfilling rather than guessing.

Place a straight board, shovel handle, or similar object across the hole to compare the flare with the surrounding ground. Once the tree is at the right height, hold it upright while you begin adding soil. It is easier to correct the depth now than after the hole is full.

Backfill and water thoroughly

Add the original soil in stages, working it gently around the roots. Pause occasionally to settle the soil with your fingers and remove large air pockets, but don't pack it hard. Avoid stomping around the trunk or pressing directly on fragile roots.

Check the tree from several directions as you work. The trunk should be upright, and the roots should remain spread rather than shifting into a bundle. Keep the soil level consistent with the surrounding ground, leaving the trunk flare uncovered. Don't create a permanent basin against the trunk.

When the hole is mostly filled, water slowly and thoroughly. This settles the soil around the roots and reveals any low spots that need a little more backfill. If the water runs off rather than soaking in, apply it more gradually or improve the soil surface around the planting area. After the water drains, add the remaining soil and water again if necessary.

A shallow mulch layer can help conserve moisture, but keep it several inches away from the trunk. About 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch spread across the root zone is usually enough. Mulch piled against the trunk creates a damp, sheltered environment that can damage bark and invite pests.

Decide whether the tree needs a stake

A newly planted tree doesn't always need staking. If it stands upright and the root ball or surrounding soil holds it firmly, gentle movement in the wind can help the trunk develop strength. Staking every tree rigidly can restrict that useful movement.

Use a stake when the site is very windy, the trunk is unusually tall or weak, the tree has a large crown relative to its roots, or the soil is loose enough that it rocks badly. Place the stake outside the root area where possible, and attach the trunk with a broad, flexible tie. The tie should support the tree without cutting into the bark or preventing modest movement.

Check the tie regularly during the growing season. Remove the stake and tie when the tree can remain upright on its own, often after the first growing season. Leaving support in place indefinitely can cause rubbing, constriction, and a less resilient trunk.

The first weeks matter most

Keep the root zone consistently moist while the tree establishes, particularly during dry, windy, or unusually warm weather. Water deeply enough to reach the planted roots, then allow excess water to drain. Frequent shallow sprinkling may wet the surface without supplying the deeper roots.

There is no universal watering calendar because soil, weather, tree size, and species all matter. Check the soil several inches below the surface. If it is drying out, water slowly; if it is saturated, wait and investigate drainage rather than adding more water. Newly planted trees can be stressed by both drought and enthusiastic overwatering.

Don't rush to fertilize at planting. The roots have been disturbed, and the priority is contact with moist soil and steady establishment. Remove competing grass and weeds from the root zone, refresh the mulch when needed, and protect the trunk from mowers, string trimmers, rabbits, or other likely damage.

Planting a bare-root tree on arrival is mostly a matter of timing and restraint. Keep the roots damp while you work, spread them naturally in a wide hole, keep the flare and graft union above the soil, and water the planting thoroughly. After that, steady moisture and protection from competition will do more for the tree than a crowded hole full of amendments or a mountain of mulch.
