How Deep Should You Plant a Nursery Plant?

A nursery plant can look perfectly healthy while sitting too deep in its container. Once planted, that mistake may not announce itself immediately. Water can collect around the stem, roots may struggle for oxygen, and the plant can decline gradually enough that you blame weather, fertilizer, or bad luck.
The most reliable planting depth is determined by the plant’s root flare or root collar—not automatically by the height of the nursery pot. Your goal is to place the point where the trunk or main stems widen into roots at the finished soil level, while allowing for the way the soil and root ball will settle.
Find the plant’s true planting line
For a tree or woody shrub, look for the root flare: the point near the base where the trunk begins to broaden and large roots emerge. It may be obvious, but nursery plants are often sold with the flare partly buried under potting mix or soil. Gently remove loose material from the top of the root ball until you can see where the uppermost substantial roots begin.
The root flare should generally finish at, or slightly above, the surrounding soil grade. Don't use the top of the container’s soil as your measurement unless it matches the location of the flare. A plant that has been growing too deeply in its pot shouldn't be buried to the same depth in your garden simply because that is where the old soil line happens to be.
The phrase “slightly above” matters because the root ball may settle. This doesn't mean leaving a large mound of exposed roots. Set the root ball so its upper surface is level with the surrounding ground, or raise it modestly when the soil is loose and likely to settle. The flare itself should remain visible or be just at the finished grade, with no cone of mulch or soil piled against the trunk.
Smaller perennials and annuals may not have a pronounced woody flare. For these plants, the crown—the point where roots meet stems—should usually be level with the surrounding soil. Planting the crown deeply can invite rot, while leaving much of the root ball exposed can cause drying and instability.
Use the container as evidence, not a rule
The potting line is useful, but it isn't the final answer. If the plant was grown correctly, the soil surface in the pot may sit close to the crown or root flare. In practice, nursery stock can be shifted, topped up with mix, or planted too deeply before you buy it. Inspect the base instead of assuming the container tells the whole story.
Before digging, place the plant near the proposed hole and examine it from several angles. Brush away loose soil with your fingers or a hand cultivator. On a container-grown tree, the first large root shouldn't be several inches below the surface of the root ball. If it is, expose the buried flare carefully and measure from that point.
Don't confuse a dense layer of fine roots near the top with the root flare. The flare is a structural widening of the trunk or stems, followed by larger roots. A mass of feeder roots may appear above or below it, especially in a root-bound plant. Those smaller roots help absorb water, but they don't establish the correct planting height.
If the root ball is tightly circling, remove the container and inspect the sides and bottom before planting. You may need to loosen or make a few shallow cuts through circling roots, following the plant’s tolerance and reliable nursery guidance. That step improves root contact with surrounding soil, but it doesn't make deep planting safe. Root preparation and planting depth are separate decisions.
Dig for the root ball, not for the entire plant
A planting hole should usually be wider than the root ball and only as deep as necessary to place it correctly. The sides should be loosened so new roots can move outward, but the bottom should remain firm enough to support the plant. A hole that is too deep creates a soft pocket in which the root ball can sink after watering.
Set the plant in the hole, then use a straight board, shovel handle, or similar object across the surrounding ground to check the height. Step back and inspect the base again. It is easier to lift or adjust the plant before backfilling than after the hole has been filled and watered.
Backfill with the soil you removed unless your soil test or local growing conditions indicate a specific correction. A pocket of dramatically different soil can hold excess water or discourage roots from moving into the surrounding ground. Improving the planting site broadly is often more useful than creating a small, rich pocket around the roots.
Water slowly after backfilling to settle air pockets, but don't use repeated flooding to force loose soil downward around a deep root ball. If the plant sinks, lift it and reset it at the proper height. Waiting until later can leave the crown or flare below grade for the rest of the season.
Account for plant type and unusual structures
Most container-grown trees and shrubs follow the root-flare rule, but several cases deserve extra attention. Grafted plants have a visible union where one plant was joined to another. That union is usually kept above the soil, although the correct position can vary by species, climate, and growing purpose. The plant tag or nursery’s instructions should take precedence over a general rule.
Roses are a familiar example of a plant for which planting advice can differ by region. Some recommendations place the graft union at or slightly below the soil surface in colder areas, while other guidance keeps it above grade. That variation reflects winter protection and local practice, not a contradiction you should resolve by guessing. Check the instructions for the specific rose and your region before planting.
Bare-root plants are measured from the root collar, not from the length of the roots. Spread the roots naturally in the hole, with the collar at the surrounding soil level. Don't bend long roots into a cramped hole or trim them merely to make an incorrectly sized hole work.
Plants grown in fabric or wire baskets also require inspection. Remove a container or fabric material when the nursery instructions call for it, and deal with any material that could constrict the trunk as it expands. With balled-and-burlapped trees, keep the top of the root ball at the correct grade and remove as much accessible wrapping and cord as practical without allowing the root ball to fall apart.
Check the plant’s special instructions: If you see a graft union, root collar, burlap-wrapped root ball, or an unusually deep crown, confirm the species-specific planting recommendation before covering it. These features can change the general rule about where the soil should finish.
A sloped site adds another complication. Measure from the soil grade immediately around the plant rather than from the uphill side of the garden bed. Shape the surrounding ground so water doesn't wash soil onto the flare. On a steep slope, a small terrace or stabilizing ring may be safer than simply planting deeper to keep the plant upright.
Poorly drained soil isn't solved by burying the root ball higher and hoping for the best. A raised planting position can help in some sites, but it must be stable and suited to the plant. If water remains in the planting area after ordinary rain, consider drainage, site selection, or a species better adapted to the conditions. Planting depth can't compensate for roots sitting in persistent saturated soil.
Finish with water, mulch, and restraint
After planting, apply a thorough watering to settle the soil around the roots. Keep the plant stable without tying it so tightly that it can't move naturally. Check the height again after the first watering and after heavy rain, particularly in loose soil.
Mulch should conserve moisture and moderate temperature, not hide the base of the plant. Spread it in a broad, shallow layer and leave a clear gap around the trunk, stems, or crown. A mulch volcano may look tidy for a week, but it keeps damp material against bark and makes it harder to notice a planting-depth problem.
For the first season, watch the soil moisture rather than watering by calendar alone. A correctly planted plant can still struggle in compacted soil, drought, or poorly timed irrigation. Conversely, frequent shallow watering can keep the surface wet while the deeper root ball remains unevenly moist. Check below the surface with your finger or a hand tool and adjust to the plant and weather.
The quick test is simple: identify the root flare or crown, place it at the finished soil grade, make the hole wider rather than needlessly deeper, and prevent settling or mulch from covering the base. If you can't find that transition, pause before planting and expose more of the root ball. A few extra minutes of inspection can prevent a problem that otherwise develops quietly for years.
