Decide whether the plant needs repotting
A plant may need a larger pot when roots are circling densely around the inside, emerging from drainage holes, or forming a thick mat at the bottom. Slow growth, soil that dries unusually quickly, or a plant that repeatedly tips over can also point to a crowded root system. These signs are more useful together than individually. A root appearing through one drainage hole doesn’t always mean the plant is urgently outgrowing its container.
The best way to check is to slide the plant out of its pot when the soil is slightly moist but not saturated. Support the stems near the soil surface, tip the pot sideways, and ease the root ball out. If the roots hold the shape of the pot and are densely wrapped around the outside, more room is probably helpful. If the roots are sparse and the soil still has plenty of open space, repotting may create more disturbance than benefit.

A little temporary drooping can occur after the move, especially if roots were disturbed. Give the plant consistent care and watch the trend rather than reacting to every leaf. Persistent wilting, foul-smelling soil, rapidly yellowing leaves, or water that refuses to drain suggests a problem with damaged roots, excessive moisture, or the potting setup.

In practice, the plant may spend a long time sitting in damp soil. Preserve the root ball unless you need to deal with rotting soil, a severe pest problem, or a tightly compacted condition that won’t accept water.
