Start with the warming problem, not the mulch
Bare soil usually warms faster than soil covered with a thick organic mulch because dark, exposed soil absorbs sunlight directly. That doesn’t make bare soil the best long-term choice. It can crust, erode, dry unevenly, and invite early weeds. It simply means that spring warming and summer protection often call for different strategies.
First, identify whether your limitation is cold soil, cold air, excess moisture, or all three. Heavy clay may stay cold because it holds water and drains slowly. A raised bed with well-drained soil may warm reasonably well but still need protection from overnight frost. A low garden in a cool pocket can lose heat quickly even after a sunny afternoon.

Condensation can increase humidity at the soil surface, and the soil can become too hot on bright days, especially in a low bed or tunnel. Plastic can also blow loose, collect water, and tear at the edges.
Use clear plastic before sowing or transplanting, then remove it when the soil reaches the temperature your crop requires. Don’t leave it pressed against foliage.
