How to Care for Plants Under a Newly Planted Tree

A newly planted tree can make the space beneath it feel unfinished, especially if you’ve removed existing plants or are eager to create a layered garden. But the first season is less about filling every bare patch and more about helping the tree recover from transplanting without creating new problems for the plants around it.
The key is to treat the area under the tree as a changing environment. Light will shift as the canopy develops, the soil may dry unevenly, and frequent watering for the tree can be too much—or too little—for nearby plants. If something under the tree is struggling, recover by identifying the source of stress rather than automatically adding more water, fertilizer, or mulch.
Put the young tree first
A recently planted tree has a limited root system, even if its eventual canopy will be broad. Much of its original root mass was left behind during digging, and the remaining roots need time to grow into the surrounding soil. The tree should therefore receive the most consistent care during its establishment period, which commonly lasts at least one growing season and may take longer for larger trees, difficult sites, or hot, dry conditions.
Keep the soil around the root ball evenly moist but not constantly saturated. Water slowly enough that moisture reaches the depth of the root ball and the surrounding backfill, rather than running off across compacted soil. The exact schedule depends on tree size, soil type, weather, and season. Sandy soil may need attention more often than clay, while cool or rainy weather reduces the need for supplemental water.
Newly planted trees can show stress even when the soil surface looks damp. Check moisture several inches below the surface near—but not directly against—the root ball. If the soil is dry at that depth, water thoroughly. If it is wet and heavy for extended periods, improve drainage conditions where possible and reduce watering rather than adding more.
Check the tree’s first-season needs: Use the planting instructions, nursery label, or advice from your local extension service to refine watering for your tree species, soil, and weather. Regional conditions can change what “regular watering” means in practice.
Keep grass and vigorous ground covers away from the trunk. Turf competes strongly for water and nutrients, and mowing or trimming equipment can damage thin young bark. A small, mulched area around the tree is usually easier to maintain and gives you a clear space for checking the soil.
Water the tree without drowning its neighbors
Understory plants often suffer because the watering pattern for a tree doesn’t match their needs. A hose directed at the trunk may wet only a small area, while a shallow sprinkler can leave the tree’s root ball dry and keep shallow-rooted plants perpetually damp. Watering should be broad and slow, with the main attention placed on the tree’s root zone rather than on every plant equally.
For hand watering, move around the planting area instead of creating one muddy spot. A soaker hose or drip system can distribute moisture more evenly, but inspect emitters regularly. They can clog, shift, or deliver water too close to the trunk. Irrigation should wet the soil, not the bark, and it shouldn't leave puddles around the tree base.
Plants beneath the tree may need less frequent but deeper watering than annual flowers in small containers. On the other hand, drought-tolerant plants can still need supplemental water while their own roots establish. Watch the plants and the soil together: wilt that persists in cool conditions, yellowing with soggy soil, and dry, brittle new growth each suggest different problems.
If the tree and understory plants have conflicting needs, favor a simpler planting scheme. It’s better to grow a few compatible plants well than to force a thirsty collection into a dry-rooted tree bed.
Use mulch as a buffer, not a blanket
Mulch helps reduce evaporation, moderate soil temperature, and limit competition from weeds. Spread it in a broad, shallow layer over the root zone, generally about 2 to 3 inches deep unless local recommendations or the material suggest otherwise. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk and expose the root flare, where the trunk widens before entering the soil.
A mound of mulch pressed against the trunk holds moisture against the bark and can create conditions that encourage decay or pest problems. It also hides the trunk flare and makes it harder to notice settling, damage, or girdling roots. The familiar “mulch volcano” isn't a kindness to a tree; it’s a damp collar.
Refresh mulch only when it has decomposed or thinned substantially. Adding a new layer every year without checking the existing depth can gradually bury the planting area. Keep mulch from covering the crowns of small understory plants, too. If a plant’s stems emerge from a deep, wet layer, it may decline even though the surrounding soil appears well cared for.
Expect light to change
A young tree’s shade pattern isn't permanent. The planting site may be sunny immediately after installation, then become partly shaded as branches and leaves develop. Nearby buildings, fences, and seasonal sun angles can change the amount of light further.
Choose plants according to the light they receive now, but avoid filling the entire area with expensive, permanent specimens until you understand how the canopy behaves. Temporary annuals, movable containers, or a restrained layer of mulch can give you time to observe the site. If you plant perennials, select adaptable choices that can tolerate some variation rather than species that require a narrow range of conditions.
Light isn’t the only issue. Tree roots gradually occupy more of the surrounding soil, and rain may be intercepted by the canopy before it reaches the ground. A plant that thrives during the tree’s first year may struggle later because the soil is drier and the shade is deeper. Leave enough space to adjust the understory instead of treating the first planting plan as permanent.
Plant carefully around developing roots
Avoid deep digging close to a newly planted tree. Cutting through roots can add stress at the same time the tree is trying to recover, and disturbing the root ball can loosen the tree or create air pockets in the soil. When adding plants, use small hand tools, make shallow planting holes, and work farther from the trunk whenever possible.
Don't pile new soil over the root zone to create raised beds around the tree. Even a modest change in grade can reduce oxygen available to roots. If the site needs a different soil level or drainage solution, address that as a broader landscape problem rather than burying the tree’s base.
Avoid aggressive ground covers and spreading vines until you know how they behave. Plants that quickly cover bare soil can also cover the trunk, conceal irrigation problems, and compete with the tree. Leave visible space around the trunk and mark irrigation lines or other buried features before planting.
Recover from common problems
The tree wilts while nearby plants look fine. Check the root ball and surrounding soil at depth. The original root ball may be drying out even if nearby soil is moist. Water slowly and thoroughly, then reassess rather than watering repeatedly in small amounts. Also check that the tree is planted at the correct depth and that mulch isn't covering the trunk flare.
The plants under the tree are yellowing. Yellow leaves can result from excess moisture, poor drainage, root disturbance, nutrient problems, or normal seasonal change. Start with soil moisture and drainage. Don’t apply fertilizer automatically, particularly while the tree is establishing. Excess nutrients can encourage weak growth or wash into waterways without solving the underlying issue.
The understory plants wilt in the afternoon. Some plants wilt temporarily during heat and recover in the evening. If they remain wilted, inspect the soil and consider whether the tree canopy is intercepting rainfall. Move or replace plants that need more moisture rather than increasing irrigation for the entire bed if the tree doesn't need it.
The tree’s leaves scorch at the edges. Heat, wind, transplant stress, and inconsistent moisture can all contribute. Keep the root zone evenly moist, maintain correctly placed mulch, and avoid pruning healthy branches simply to reduce stress. Remove only damaged or dead material when there is a clear reason to do so, following sound pruning practice.
The tree settles or leans after watering. Check whether the root ball is moving in the soil. A newly planted tree may need proper staking or correction, but staking shouldn't be used to conceal a planting-depth or root-ball problem. If the tree is unstable, contact the nursery, installer, or a qualified arborist promptly rather than repeatedly tamping soil against the trunk.
Choose a low-drama understory
During establishment, the most reliable understory is usually one that needs modest irrigation, tolerates the site’s changing light, and doesn’t require frequent digging or fertilizing. You can leave some soil mulched, use a few temporary containers, or plant in small groups while you observe the tree’s growth.
Keep a simple record of watering, rainfall, and plant response for the first season. This makes it easier to tell whether a problem follows hot weather, poor drainage, a blocked emitter, or increasing shade. It also prevents the common recovery mistake of changing several things at once and losing track of what helped.
Give the tree a clear, protected base; water deeply enough to reach its developing roots; keep mulch shallow and away from the trunk; and let the understory evolve gradually. If an existing plant is failing, moving it may be kinder than trying to force it into conditions that no longer suit it. A young tree doesn’t need a finished garden beneath it immediately—it needs room, moisture managed with care, and time to settle in.
