Read the garden as several small climates

Note when direct sun first reaches each section, when it disappears, and whether the shade is open and bright or dense and dim. Morning shade beneath a high, lightly leafed tree is very different from deep shade beside a wall or evergreen hedge.

In warm climates, even plants commonly grown in full sun may appreciate afternoon protection, especially when humidity is low or irrigation is limited.

Grouping containers with similar needs makes watering easier, but don’t place moisture-loving plants in the same pot as drought-tolerant ones simply to simplify the display.

Healthy soil gives plants more room to cope with fluctuating conditions, but amendments aren’t a substitute for choosing a suitable plant. Improve compacted or depleted soil gradually with well-finished organic matter appropriate for your garden.
