It could mean the distance from the center of one plant to the center of the next, the gap between mature foliage, or the recommended distance for a dense mass planting. Those approaches produce very different results.
Begin by writing down the expected mature width and height for each plant. Use the widest reasonable size rather than the smallest figure you see. A shrub described as 3 to 5 feet wide should be planned as a 5-foot plant unless you have a strong reason to keep it smaller. A perennial listed as 18 to 24 inches wide deserves the same treatment: plan around 24 inches if you want it to reach its natural size without constant correction.
The mature width is especially important when plants will share a bed. Two plants that each reach 2 feet wide need about 4 feet from center to center if you want their foliage to meet without heavily overlapping. If you prefer a visible gap between them, add that gap to the total.
The calculation is straightforward:

For two plants with mature widths of 24 inches each, a 6-inch gap would require 30 inches between their centers. Labels are written for broad audiences, so their spacing recommendations may be optimized for different purposes. For distinct plants with room around them, use wider spacing. Open gaps make each plant easier to inspect, water, prune, divide, and replace. Wind can also affect your decision. A windy site may benefit from more space between large plants so branches and foliage have room to move without constant rubbing. On the other hand, a very exposed location can dry plants and soil quickly, making extremely wide spacing less efficient for water use. Your goal isn't simply maximum distance; it’s enough room for healthy growth without creating unnecessary maintenance.
Check the conditions behind the label: Before finalizing a tight spacing plan, compare the tag’s mature-size estimate with guidance from your local extension service, botanical garden, or regional nursery. Confirm that the plant’s expected size and performance fit your hardiness zone, moisture conditions, light level, and typical growing season.
Use a spacing range instead of chasing one perfect number

Choose the higher end when you want natural forms, easier access, stronger airflow, or fewer future interventions.
For example, suppose one tag recommends 18 inches and another recommends 30 inches for a plant expected to reach about 24 inches wide. Eighteen inches may be intended for a dense border or production-style planting. Thirty inches may allow the plant to show its full shape with space around it. A distance around 24 to 26 inches could be a sensible middle choice for a mixed bed where you want foliage to meet eventually but still need access during establishment.
Before planting, mark the proposed centers with flags, sticks, or small pots. Stand back and view the arrangement from the direction where you usually see the garden. Walk the paths and reach into the bed as if you were weeding. This inexpensive mock-up often reveals problems that a list of measurements won’t show, including blocked sightlines, awkward corners, and plants that will overwhelm a narrow space.
