Why Mulch Attracts Earwigs and When They Are Actually a Problem

Mulch gives earwigs exactly what they look for during the day: darkness, moisture, and a protected place to hide. Finding several under a board or handful of bark can look alarming, but their presence alone doesn’t mean your plants are in trouble. In many gardens, earwigs are mostly scavengers that help consume decaying plant material and small insects.
The useful question isn't “How do I eliminate every earwig?” It’s “Are these earwigs causing meaningful damage, and what small change would reduce the problem?” That distinction matters because broad treatment can disrupt other insects while leaving the conditions that attracted earwigs unchanged.
Why mulch is attractive to earwigs
Earwigs are nocturnal. They spend daylight hours in cool, sheltered places and emerge after dark to feed and move around. Mulch creates a network of hiding places beneath leaves, bark pieces, straw, and other loose material. It also slows evaporation from the soil, which is valuable to an insect that tends to avoid dry, exposed conditions.
The attraction is strongest where mulch is consistently damp and pressed close to plant stems, containers, edging, or other surfaces. A thick layer that stays wet after watering provides more cover than a thin, airy layer that dries between waterings. Wood piles, dense ground cover, boards, stones, compost areas, and overgrown vegetation can add to the same sheltered habitat.
Earwigs aren't automatically plant-eaters. Their diet varies with species, life stage, food availability, and weather. They may feed on decomposing material, algae, small organisms, aphids, soft plant tissue, flowers, or seedlings. Some species can be useful predators, although they shouldn't be treated as a dependable form of pest control. Their presence is best understood as part of the garden’s food web rather than proof of an infestation.
The familiar pincers at the rear can make earwigs seem more threatening than they are. Those forceps are used in mating, defense, and handling food, but earwigs don’t use them to sting people. They may pinch if handled, so you still have a good reason to leave them alone, but they aren't a sign that the garden has become unsafe.
How to tell whether earwigs are damaging plants
Start with the plants, not the mulch. Look for fresh damage in the morning, especially after a warm, damp night. Earwigs commonly leave irregular holes or chewed edges in tender leaves and petals. Young seedlings can be nibbled along the edges or damaged at the crown. Soft fruits and vegetables that rest against damp mulch may also show feeding.
A few holes don't prove earwigs are responsible. Caterpillars can leave ragged or rounded holes and may hide on the undersides of leaves. Slugs and snails often create irregular damage close to the soil, sometimes accompanied by slime trails. Flea beetles tend to produce many small “shot holes,” while mammals may leave torn foliage, missing stems, or larger marks. Weather-related tearing, hail, and mechanical damage can also imitate chewing.
Inspect the affected plant from several angles. Check leaf undersides, the crown, the soil surface, and the underside of nearby mulch or containers. Earwigs are easier to find around dusk or after dark, when they are active. A flashlight inspection can tell you more than repeatedly turning over mulch during the day and finding whatever happens to be sheltering there.
Pay attention to a pattern rather than one specimen. If earwigs are present beneath mulch but the plants are growing normally, treatment is usually unnecessary. If fresh damage appears night after night, is concentrated on tender growth, and coincides with earwig activity, the case for intervention is stronger. Even then, you generally want to reduce access and shelter before considering a pesticide.
Check the damage after dark: Inspect affected plants with a flashlight for several evenings, then compare what you find with the shape and location of the feeding marks. This helps you verify that earwigs, rather than slugs or caterpillars, are the main cause.
When earwigs are more likely to become a problem
Earwigs are more likely to matter when several conditions overlap. Tender seedlings and thin-leaved plants are easier to damage than established plants with tough foliage. Newly transplanted plants may also be vulnerable because they have limited growth to spare. A damp bed with deep, compacted mulch and many hiding places can support more activity than a bed that drains and dries appropriately between waterings.
Crowded plantings create another edge case. Dense foliage touching the soil gives earwigs protected routes into the canopy, while fruit, flower petals, and fallen leaves provide food nearby. Container gardens can concentrate the problem because pots, saucers, walls, and mulch create a small collection of cool crevices. A plant may appear to have an earwig problem when the real issue is that its container stays wet and offers shelter on every side.
Weather can also change the picture quickly. Prolonged rain or frequent irrigation increases suitable hiding places. During hot, dry conditions, earwigs may gather in the few damp locations available, making a small group look unusually concentrated. A sudden increase after moving mulch or watering doesn't necessarily indicate a growing population; it may simply make hidden insects visible.
Some earwigs feed mostly on decaying material, while others are more willing to chew living plants. That difference is one reason a universal rule about earwigs is unreliable. The species in your area, the plants available, and the condition of the garden all influence whether the insects remain background residents or become noticeable feeders.
Change the habitat before treating the garden
If damage is minor, begin by making the immediate area less convenient. Pull mulch a little away from plant stems and crowns so those surfaces can dry and so insects have fewer protected routes directly into tender growth. Don’t remove mulch from the entire bed automatically; mulch still moderates soil temperature, reduces evaporation, and protects soil from erosion. Adjust the depth and placement where shelter is creating trouble.
Remove unnecessary hiding places close to vulnerable plants. Clear fallen leaves, damaged fruit, and decaying vegetation that touches stems. Empty or reposition damp saucers under containers, correct leaking irrigation, and water in a way that supports the plant without keeping the surface continuously wet. You’re aiming for appropriate moisture, not a bone-dry garden. Overcorrecting can stress plants and create a different set of problems.
For seedlings, physical protection is often more reliable than changing an established bed. A fine mesh cover or simple barrier can reduce nighttime access while plants are small, provided it doesn’t trap excessive heat or interfere with pollination when that matters. Keep the barrier’s edges close to the soil, because a gap at ground level can defeat the purpose.
Trapping can help confirm activity and reduce numbers in a small area. A short piece of hose, a rolled section of corrugated cardboard, or a board laid on the soil can provide a daytime refuge. Check it in the morning and empty the earwigs elsewhere or remove them from the growing area. This approach is especially useful around a few containers or a vulnerable row of seedlings, where you can monitor the result without treating the whole garden.
When broader treatment is usually the wrong first move
Broad insecticide use is rarely justified by earwigs simply being present. It can harm pollinators, predators, decomposers, and other insects that weren't involved in the damage. It may also reduce visible earwig numbers temporarily without correcting excessive moisture, dense debris, or mulch touching the plants. Once the treated area becomes suitable again, insects can return.
Treatment deserves more consideration only when damage is persistent, economically or horticulturally significant, and not controlled by habitat changes or physical barriers. Even in that situation, identify the pest as carefully as possible and follow the product label for the crop, site, application rate, protective equipment, and restrictions. Garden products and permitted uses can change, so current label directions are the authority rather than an old recipe or a general internet recommendation.
Avoid improvised mixtures such as household cleaners, excess soap, or concentrated oils. They can burn foliage, contaminate soil or water, and create risks greater than the original chewing. “Natural” doesn't mean harmless, and a product aimed at earwigs can affect many other organisms in the same mulch layer.
A sensible decision rule
If you find earwigs but no fresh plant damage, leave the mulch in place and keep monitoring. If you find light damage, improve spacing, dryness, and access around the affected plants, then check again after several nights. If you find repeated damage on valuable seedlings or tender crops, combine habitat adjustment with a barrier or simple trap. Escalate only when the damage continues and you can identify earwigs as the consistent cause.
This approach leaves room for the fact that earwigs are neither garden heroes nor automatic villains. They may recycle organic matter, consume small insects, and occasionally chew plants you care about. Your goal isn't perfect control; it is keeping their shelter and feeding activity in proportion to the value and vulnerability of the plants nearby.
Start with an evening inspection, move mulch away from stems, and correct the damp hiding places closest to damaged plants. Give those changes several days to show whether feeding declines. In a healthy garden, a few earwigs under the mulch are usually a manageable part of the scenery—not a summons to declare war on the entire composting community.
