How to Take Hardwood Cuttings From Dormant Shrubs

Success depends less on elaborate equipment than on timing, sound material, correct orientation, and patience. The most common mistakes are choosing immature or damaged wood, allowing cuttings to dry out, and treating every shrub as though it follows the same rooting schedule.
Choose the right time and material
Collect hardwood cuttings during dormancy, usually from late autumn after leaf fall through late winter, before the shrub breaks bud. The exact window depends on your climate and the plant. In colder temperate regions, you may take cuttings before severe freezing or wait until the deepest winter has passed. In milder areas, the usable period can extend further into winter, provided the buds haven’t begun to swell.
Aim for healthy, one-year-old growth: stems produced during the most recent growing season that have matured from green to firm brown or gray-brown wood. They should bend slightly or snap cleanly rather than collapsing, splitting, or feeling soft. A stem around pencil thickness is a useful starting point, although some shrubs root from thinner or thicker material.
Avoid weak, shaded shoots, heavily flowering sections, diseased wood, and stems with insect damage or mechanical injuries. The strongest-looking branch isn’t automatically the best source if it is old, unusually thick, or covered in rough, unproductive wood. Hardwood cuttings generally perform best when they are vigorous but not excessively mature.
Suitable shrubs vary. Many deciduous shrubs, including currants, dogwoods, willows, forsythia, quince, and some roses, can be propagated from hardwood cuttings. Others root slowly or inconsistently, and evergreen shrubs often need a different approach. Check the needs of the particular species before preparing a large number of cuttings.
Confirm your shrub’s cutting window: Check whether the species is normally propagated from hardwood and whether local conditions have left it fully dormant. A shrub with swelling buds or active new growth may be better handled with a different cutting method and schedule.
Identify the sections worth keeping
Look along each candidate stem for several healthy buds and reasonably even thickness. A cutting commonly measures about 15 to 30 centimeters, or 6 to 12 inches, with multiple nodes along its length. The lower portion should be firm and unblemished, and the upper portion should have mature buds rather than a soft, thin tip.
The base of a one-year shoot may be slightly thicker and more mature than its tip. That is useful, but don’t assume every part of the shoot is equally viable. The terminal few centimeters may be underdeveloped, while the oldest section may be too woody or have poor bud spacing. A middle section often gives you the most consistent material.
Polarity matters. The end that grew closest to the shrub’s roots must go down, and the former tip must go up. If both ends look similar, make a flat cut at the top and a slanted cut at the base. This marking system prevents the easy-to-make mistake of planting half a bundle upside down. A cutting placed upside down may fail even when the wood itself is healthy.
You can mark the base immediately as you work, rather than relying on memory later. Keep cuttings from different shrubs or cultivars separately labelled, especially if the stems look alike. Once they are bundled, winter wood has a talent for becoming a small pile of anonymous sticks.
Prepare cuttings without overworking them
Use clean, sharp secateurs or a propagation knife to make firm cuts. A crushed end has less useful contact with the rooting medium and can decay more readily. Make the basal cut just below a node, where the stem’s tissues may support root initiation, and make the top cut just above a bud. The exact position doesn’t guarantee rooting, but it gives you a clear, repeatable structure.
Remove any remaining leaves, flower remnants, or side shoots. Hardwood cuttings usually have no leaves at collection, but a late-season shoot may still carry a few. Don’t strip away the bark or scrape the stem aggressively. Wounding can sometimes help difficult plants, but unnecessary damage also creates entry points for decay.
Rooting hormone is optional rather than a universal requirement. Some easy-to-root shrubs need none, while a suitable commercial rooting compound may improve consistency for slower species. If you use one, apply only the amount recommended on its label and avoid contaminating the container. More hormone isn’t a shortcut to more roots; excessive application can injure the base.
Prepare cuttings soon after collection if possible. If you can’t insert them immediately, keep them cool and slightly moist. Wrap them in barely damp paper or a suitable moist packing material and place them in a labelled bag or container. They shouldn't sit in standing water, and they shouldn’t be left exposed to indoor heat, sun, or drying wind.
Choose a rooting method
You have two dependable broad options: root the cuttings in containers or plant them directly into a prepared outdoor bed. Containers give you greater control over moisture, drainage, and protection. An outdoor bed can be simpler and may suit large batches, particularly when the soil is workable and winter conditions are moderate.
For containers, use a clean pot with drainage holes and a free-draining medium that holds some moisture without becoming saturated. A propagation mix or a blend based on coarse material and organic matter can work, provided it doesn’t compact around the stems. Garden soil alone is often too dense in a small container and may remain wet at the base.
Insert each cutting deeply enough to keep it stable, leaving one or two buds above the surface and several nodes below it. Firm the medium around the stem so there are no large air pockets, then water thoroughly and let excess water drain. Don’t pack the pot so tightly that the cuttings touch; airflow helps limit rot.
For an outdoor bed, choose a sheltered spot with well-drained soil and protection from harsh wind. Insert the cuttings in a row with most of their length below the surface, leaving only the upper buds exposed. Firm the soil around them and label the row. Avoid places that flood in winter or heat up quickly in early spring.
Protect cuttings while they wait
The goal during the dormant period isn't to force rapid top growth. It is to keep the wood from drying out, rotting, or being repeatedly heaved from the soil by freezing and thawing. A sheltered cold frame, unheated greenhouse, or protected outdoor position can provide useful buffering without turning the cuttings into a warm-weather project.
Keep the medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Check containers periodically, particularly during dry, windy weather or when they are under cover. Outdoor cuttings may need little attention during wet periods, but a long dry spell can still dehydrate dormant wood.
A loose mulch around outdoor cuttings can moderate temperature changes and reduce moisture loss. Keep it away from the buds and avoid burying the visible tops. In containers, group pots in a sheltered place and protect them from severe cold as appropriate for the species, while maintaining ventilation during mild spells.
Don't seal cuttings in an airtight plastic environment. High humidity without airflow encourages mold and decay, especially when the medium is already wet. Likewise, don’t place dormant hardwood in a heated room simply because it is easier to see. Early warmth can push buds before roots are ready to support them.
Judge progress without pulling them up
Rooting is often slow and uneven. Some cuttings may begin forming roots before the buds open, while others produce shoots first by using stored energy in the stem. New leaves are encouraging, but they don’t prove that a functioning root system has developed.
The gentlest check is resistance. After enough time has passed for the species and conditions involved, lightly tug the cutting upward. A rooted cutting should hold against the medium, whereas an unrooted one may lift easily. Even this test should be occasional and gentle; repeated pulling can tear new roots that are too small to replace the lost progress.
You can also inspect a small sample rather than disturbing every cutting. If a cutting has clearly failed, it may be dark, soft, shriveled, or foul-smelling at the base. Healthy rooted material generally remains firm, with pale roots developing from the buried nodes or basal end. Don’t discard a slow cutting merely because it hasn't produced top growth on your preferred schedule.
Once roots are established, allow the young plants to develop before moving them into their permanent positions. Transplant during a suitable mild period, water them in, and protect them from competition while they establish. A cutting that has rooted isn't yet a mature shrub; it still has a small root system and can be overwhelmed by drought, weeds, or rough handling.
Prevent the mistakes that cost the most cuttings
The first preventable error is collecting at the wrong stage. If buds are opening, the plant may no longer be dormant enough for a straightforward hardwood method. The second is using poor wood: soft tips, diseased sections, or old branches rarely compensate for careful planting.
The next errors concern moisture. Cuttings that dry out before insertion may never recover, while cuttings kept in saturated compost can rot before roots form. Aim for stable, moderate moisture and good drainage rather than constant watering. Protection should reduce extremes, not eliminate airflow or turn the rooting area into a greenhouse.
Finally, avoid judging the batch too soon. Hardwood cuttings can take months, and different species—and even different stems from the same shrub—may behave differently. Label everything, keep conditions steady, and assess progress by firmness, bud development, and gentle resistance rather than by the first green shoot you see.
Collect dormant, healthy one-year wood, mark its direction, keep the basal end clean, and plant it deeply enough to remain stable. Then protect the cuttings from drying, saturation, and premature warmth. With those basics in place, propagation becomes less a test of luck and more a quiet exercise in giving the shrub time to do its part.
