Start with the drainage hole
A container should have at least one genuine drainage opening at its lowest point. Water needs a clear path out of the pot, not merely a decorative indentation or a hole placed high on the side. For small containers, one opening may be adequate. Larger pots usually benefit from several holes spread across the base so water doesn’t collect in a low spot.
The holes don’t need to be enormous, but they should be large enough that potting mix and roots can’t easily seal them. A hole roughly the width of a pencil or larger is often more useful than a cluster of tiny pinholes. The right size also depends on the container and the mix: very fine material can wash out of a large opening, while tiny holes can clog with roots, settled mix, or mineral deposits.

Choose a material that matches your watering conditions
Container material affects how quickly moisture leaves through the sides, how heavy the pot is, and how much temperature changes reach the roots. It matters, but it can’t compensate for poor drainage or an oversized pot. A well-designed plastic container with open drainage can outperform a porous clay pot with one clogged hole.
Unglazed terracotta is porous and allows some moisture to evaporate through the sides. That can help on a covered porch or in a humid location where potting mix stays wet longer than the plant prefers. Terracotta also provides weight and stability, although it can dry the outer edge of the root ball faster than the center. Plastic and resin containers are lightweight, affordable, and less likely to crack from ordinary outdoor exposure. They retain moisture longer because their sides don’t absorb water. That’s useful for plants on windy balconies or for gardeners who can’t water frequently, but it increases the need to avoid heavy, water-holding mixes and oversized pots. Dark plastic can also heat up in direct sun, particularly when the container is small and exposed on all sides.
Metal containers are durable and often have a slim profile, but they can heat and cool quickly. Use an appropriately sized liner or choose a location that protects roots from intense afternoon sun. Always verify that the metal container has drainage openings; many decorative tubs are intended as outer cachepots rather than planting vessels.

They can be attractive and practical, but water must be poured out after watering rather than left pooled around the inner pot. If you plant directly into a cachepot, make sure it has a true drainage opening and a way for water to escape without damaging the surface beneath it.
A saucer can protect a patio or porch, but it shouldn’t function as a permanent reservoir. After watering, allow the container to drain fully and empty the saucer.
