Does Your Raised Bed Need Soil, Compost, or Both?

Raised beds need a filling plan because soil and compost do different jobs as depth, drainage, crops, and settling change. I’ll explain how to combine them, diagnose weak mixes, and maintain a productive bed without repeatedly rebuilding it.

A raised bed can look full when you build it and surprisingly low a few months later. That change is usually settling and decomposition, especially when the bed contains a large amount of compost or other organic material. Choosing between soil, compost, or both is less about finding one perfect ingredient and more about giving the bed a stable base with enough organic matter to support plants.

For most raised beds, the sensible answer is both: a primarily soil-based growing medium amended with a moderate amount of finished compost. The exact balance depends on the bed’s depth, what you’re growing, how quickly it drains, and whether you’re repairing an established bed or filling a new one.

What soil and compost each contribute

“Raised-bed soil” is a broad label rather than a guaranteed recipe. A good soil-based mix generally provides mineral material—such as topsoil, loam, or sandy soil—along with organic matter. Mineral particles give the bed weight and structure. They help anchor roots, hold nutrients, and keep the surface from shrinking dramatically every time organic material breaks down.

Compost contributes decomposed organic matter, nutrients, and biological activity. It can improve the structure of a heavy soil and help a light soil hold moisture and nutrients. It isn’t, however, a complete substitute for the mineral portion of a bed. Compost continues to decompose, so a bed made mostly of compost may settle substantially and can become less predictable as it ages.

That doesn’t make compost bad. It makes compost a useful amendment rather than an automatic foundation. A bed filled with a stable soil-and-compost blend is usually easier to water, support, and maintain than one filled with a deep layer of loose organic material.

Start with the bed’s depth

Depth affects both the amount of material you need and the consequences of settling. A shallow bed may need only a few inches of growing medium over the ground, while a tall bed may hold a much larger volume. The taller the bed, the more important it is to use a mix with enough mineral soil to remain stable.

For many vegetables, roughly 8 to 12 inches of good growing medium is workable, provided the soil beneath the bed is open and roots can grow into it. Root crops and plants with larger root systems benefit from greater depth. If the bed sits on concrete, compacted ground, or another surface roots can’t enter, the full root zone must be provided inside the bed rather than assumed to exist below it.

A deep bed doesn’t necessarily need to be filled entirely with expensive bagged raised-bed mix. You can use suitable, reasonably clean soil for the lower portion and reserve higher-quality compost or blended mix for the upper root zone. The materials still need to drain well and be free of obvious construction debris, persistent weed roots, and other contaminants.

Measure the inside length, width, and intended fill depth before buying materials. Multiply those dimensions to estimate volume, then allow extra for settling and for topping up after the mix has been watered. Bags and bulk suppliers may use different volume units, so check the product quantity rather than relying on the number of bags alone.

A dependable starting blend

For a new vegetable or flower bed, a practical starting point is a blend containing mostly soil-based material with about one-quarter to one-third finished compost by volume. You can mix the ingredients before filling the bed or add them in layers and combine them thoroughly within the root zone. Mixing is preferable because it avoids creating a distinct compost layer that can hold water differently from the surrounding material.

The exact ratio isn’t sacred. If the soil is already dark, crumbly, and rich in organic matter, it may need less compost. If it is dense, pale, sandy, or low in organic matter, a little more compost may help—but adding more and more compost isn’t always the best fix. Structure also depends on particle size, drainage, and whether the underlying ground allows excess water to leave.

Avoid treating “more organic matter” as a universal solution. Very compost-heavy mixes can shrink as they decompose, dry differently from mineral soil, or hold too much water if the compost is fine and poorly structured. Some compost products may also be immature or unusually rich in salts. Finished compost should look and smell like a stable, earthy material rather than hot, sour, or actively decomposing waste.

Check the mix before you fill the bed: Confirm what the soil and compost products actually contain, whether the compost is finished, and whether the supplier identifies the material’s source. A low-cost fill can become expensive if it settles badly or creates drainage and plant-growth problems.

When the bed is too wet or too dry

Drainage problems should be diagnosed before you change the recipe. A raised bed can drain poorly even when its mix contains plenty of compost if it sits on compacted soil, has a blocked base, or contains fine material that has settled into a dense layer. Adding more compost to a persistently soggy bed may make the texture less predictable rather than solving the underlying problem.

After heavy rain or thorough watering, observe how long water remains on the surface and whether the bed dries evenly. If the bed is on open ground, loosening compacted soil beneath it can improve drainage before you refill or rebuild it. If it is on a hard surface, make sure water has a clear path out through the bed and that the container’s drainage openings aren’t blocked.

A bed that dries rapidly may have too much coarse material, insufficient organic matter, shallow depth, or irrigation that wets only a small area. Compost can help increase moisture retention, but it works best when blended through the soil rather than placed as a thick top layer. Mulch on the surface can also reduce evaporation, moderate soil temperature, and slow the formation of a crust.

Adjust for what you’re growing

Most common vegetables tolerate a balanced soil-and-compost mix. Leafy greens, beans, squash, and many herbs generally benefit from fertile soil that holds moisture without staying saturated. Fruiting crops such as tomatoes and peppers also need a stable root zone, but excessive fertility can encourage abundant leafy growth without producing the result you want.

Root crops deserve extra attention. Carrots, parsnips, beets, and similar crops need loose, stone-free soil through the depth in which their roots develop. Large chunks of unfinished organic material can cause forked or distorted roots, while a bed that settles unevenly can leave shallow areas where roots run into resistance. Screen or pick out coarse debris before sowing if a smooth root crop is the goal.

Perennial herbs, flowers, and small shrubs may need a different approach from annual vegetables. Some prefer leaner, sharply drained soil and can struggle in a rich, moisture-retentive mix. Check the plant’s general growing requirements before adding compost simply because the bed is available. A raised bed gives you control over soil conditions, so use that control thoughtfully.

Repairing a bed that has settled

Settling is normal, but a sudden or dramatic drop is a clue to investigate. If the bed has fallen several inches, examine what was used as fill. Large amounts of shredded leaves, fresh plant material, straw, or unfinished compost can collapse as they decompose. A deep layer of light organic material may also have compressed under its own weight and repeated watering.

For a routine top-up, add a few inches of well-blended soil and finished compost to the surface, then water it thoroughly. Don’t automatically fill the bed to its original brim; leave enough space for irrigation and mulch. If the mix has sunk unevenly, loosen the upper layer and blend the new material into it rather than creating a sharp boundary.

If the bed has developed a sour smell, persistent sogginess, or a visibly decomposing layer, remove as much problematic material as practical and rebuild the root zone with more stable ingredients. If plants are already growing, make smaller corrections around them and avoid burying stems or crowns. A gradual repair is usually safer for established plants than turning the entire bed over midseason.

Plan for maintenance, not just filling

Compost is commonly most useful as a regular surface amendment rather than a yearly replacement for the whole bed. After a crop is removed, spread a thin layer of finished compost over the soil and incorporate it lightly into the top few inches if appropriate for the plants and season. In other cases, leave it on the surface and cover it with mulch. Soil organisms, rainfall, and later planting will work it into the upper layer over time.

Keep an eye on the bed’s level, texture, and watering pattern. A healthy mix should resist becoming hard and crusted, drain excess water, and hold enough moisture for plants between normal waterings. If the surface is compacted, gently loosen it without pulverizing the soil or disturbing established roots. If plants repeatedly show stress, test the soil or review irrigation and sunlight before assuming that more compost is needed.

Avoid adding compost from an uncertain source simply to restore volume. Compost made from plant material, manure, or mixed municipal inputs can differ in nutrient content and maturity. Use material intended for garden use and follow any available application guidance, especially when growing food. The goal is a stable, known growing medium—not merely a bed that reaches the desired height.

The practical choice

For most raised beds, fill the structure with a stable soil-based material and mix in a moderate amount of finished compost. Use greater depth for plants that need it or for beds built over impenetrable surfaces, and pay attention to drainage before changing the recipe. Treat settling as something to manage with measured top-ups, not as a reason to fill the entire bed with compost.

If the bed is new, plan the volume, blend the ingredients, water the fill, and leave room for mulch. If the bed is already struggling, diagnose whether the problem is settling, compaction, poor drainage, or an unsuitable material before adding anything. That small pause can turn a dramatic soil rescue into a straightforward maintenance job.
