1. Start with a quick garden walk
Before pulling out tools, walk the whole property with a notebook or your phone. Look for leaning trellises, loose fence panels, clogged drains, standing water, exposed roots, fallen fruit, and plants that still need attention. Some residue protects soil and feeds soil organisms; other residue becomes a winter shelter for pests or breaks down too slowly for a tidy spring planting.
Pull weeds before they set more seed, but avoid treating every stem as an emergency. If the ground is wet, walking repeatedly through beds can compact the soil more than the weeds would have harmed it. Work from paths or boards when conditions are soft, and leave soil structure intact rather than creating a muddy winter project.

4. Shut down irrigation methodically
Irrigation systems are among the most expensive parts of a garden to replace, and winter damage often begins with water trapped in the wrong place. Start by turning off the water supply to outdoor irrigation. Then open the appropriate drain points and disconnect hoses, timers, and removable fittings.
Drain hoses completely and store them in a protected location, coiled without sharp bends. A hose reel is useful, but don’t assume it has removed every pocket of water. Confirm the freeze procedure: Check your irrigation manual or local installer’s instructions for the correct shutdown method, especially for backflow devices, pumps, buried lines, and compressed-air blowouts. Local plumbing requirements and system designs differ, and cold-weather plumbing work carries real damage and safety risks.
After shutdown, label valves and zones if the system isn’t already clearly marked. A quick note such as “front bed—two valves” can save time when spring growth is competing with your memory. Photograph unusual connections before disconnecting them; the picture may be more useful than a vague recollection several months later.
5. Secure beds, structures, and containers
Inspect raised beds, cold frames, trellises, hoops, edging, and plant supports. Tighten loose screws, remove broken stakes, and store lightweight structures that could blow across the garden. Snow and ice add weight, while freeze-thaw cycles can push posts and edging out of alignment.
Empty containers that can crack when wet soil freezes and expands. Clean them, allow them to dry, and store them upside down or under cover. If a large container must remain outdoors, check whether its material is rated for freezing conditions and ensure drainage holes remain open. 6. Check dormant plants with restraint
Newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials deserve the closest attention. Confirm that soil hasn’t pulled away from their roots, that stakes and ties aren’t rubbing, and that mulch isn’t touching trunks. Watering before the ground freezes may be useful for some newly planted or evergreen plants if the soil is dry and local conditions allow it, but avoid creating saturated ground around plants that already drain poorly.
Protect vulnerable plants according to their needs, not by instinct alone. In cold-winter regions, wind and winter sun can damage evergreens even when the soil is frozen. Deer, rabbits, and rodents may also browse more heavily when other food is scarce. A physical barrier is often more dependable than a last-minute spray, but make sure guards don’t constrict growing trunks or trap wet material against bark.

Record dates only when they’ll help you compare seasons. “Irrigation drained on October 28” is useful if you’re trying to spot a pattern, but the date isn’t a universal deadline for every garden. Also note weather conditions, such as an unusually dry autumn or an early freeze. Those details explain why a normal routine may need adjusting next year.
Keep your notes somewhere you’ll actually find them: a garden notebook, a labeled folder, or a digital file with photographs. Include a short spring-start list rather than relying on memory. It might say: inspect hoses, uncover tender plants gradually, check frost damage, reopen irrigation, and test each zone before planting.
Finish with the smallest useful version
If time is short, prioritize the tasks that prevent irreversible damage: drain irrigation, secure structures, protect newly planted plants, remove diseased debris, and store tools dry. Then add mulch where soil is exposed and make a few spring notes. You don’t need a spotless garden to have a prepared one.
